Gender Equality Pioneers
Empowering Women and Girls, Building Resilient Communities
About Gender Equality Pioneers
Gender Equality Pioneers is a humanitarian organization dedicated to empowering marginalized communities in Kenya, with a primary focus on informal settlements in and around Nairobi. We work to break cycles of poverty, gender-based violence, and inequality through education, skills training, and direct support.
Our Work
Supporting Girls’ Education
We recognize that menstruation drives school absenteeism among girls in Kenya’s informal settlements. We provide sanitary towels and undergarments to keep girls in school. Without these essentials, many girls face economic exploitation or are coerced into transactional relationships with older men—creating pathways to early pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and dropout. Our intervention directly addresses these barriers to education.
Empowering Young Mothers
We support young single mothers with infant diapers, food assistance, and enrollment in technical vocational schools. Our training programs—including tailoring, cosmetology, plumbing, electrical work, and masonry—equip them with marketable skills and pathways to economic independence.
Strengthening Widows
Widows in our communities face compounded vulnerability, including economic hardship and loss of inheritance rights. We provide financial assistance, food support, help with home construction, health insurance enrollment, and advocacy to protect their legal rights.
Promoting Youth Development
For both girls and boys, we sponsor sports teams and initiatives to channel energy productively, strengthen resilience, and develop talents. We also conduct workshops and seminars on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) prevention, HIV/AIDS awareness, and financial literacy to build confidence and break stigma.
Community Support
We provide used clothing and food assistance to the most vulnerable in Viwandani slums and surrounding areas. We also support school fee assistance for both girls and boys facing documented extreme hardship.
Our Services and Programs
Sanitary Products and Menstrual Health
We provide access to sanitary products and menstrual health education to ensure girls remain in school and maintain their dignity. Our program addresses period poverty and breaks the stigma surrounding menstruation in marginalized communities.
Support for Single Mothers and Families
We offer comprehensive support to single mothers including food assistance, diapers, and essential supplies. Our programs help alleviate poverty and provide stability for vulnerable families, enabling mothers to focus on their children’s wellbeing and education.
Skills Training and Violence Prevention
We deliver vocational skills training programs to promote economic independence and self-sufficiency. Additionally, we run awareness and intervention initiatives to combat drug abuse and gender-based violence, fostering resilience and safety in our communities.
